What are Alka-Seltzer Original Effervescent Tablets?

Alka-Seltzer Original tablets are a medicine containing aspirin, sodium hydrogen carbonate, and citric acid. They are especially effective when taken before bed and again in the morning.

The tablets are suitable for the relief of general pain such as migraines, period pains, rheumatic, and muscular pain and the symptomatic relief of colds and flu, as well as heartburn and indigestion.

These are great for fast and effective relief from headaches with upset stomachs, particularly after too much to eat or drink.

How do the active ingredients in Alka-Seltzer tablets work? 
 

Aspirin:

Belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These work to relieve pain and inflammation, and can also reduce a high temperatures. 

Sodium hydrogen carbonate and Citric acid:

Work as antacids, providing symptomatic relief against heartburn and indigestion by neutralising acid in the stomach. 

Warnings and Precautions

• Not suitable for children under 16 years.

• Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Do not use if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients this product contains or if you have had a previous reaction

• You have a history of allergic reactions induced by pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medicines

• You have severe kidney or liver problems

• You have severe heart problems

• You have a disorder which causes excessive bleeding such as haemophilia 

• You have or have had, a stomach or duodenal ulcer

• You are on a high dose of methotrexate (15mg per week or more) 

Speak to your GP or our pharmacist before use if: 

• You are taking any other medicines, including those obtained without a prescription

• You are allergic to any other pain relieving, anti-rheumatic or anti-inflammatory medicines

• You suffer from tightness in the chest or asthma

• You have low uric acid excretion, which is commonly associated with gout

• You have a history of gastrointestinal disorders (regular stomach upsets)

• You have a deficiency in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), since you may experience anaemia

• You have kidney, liver, heart or blood circulation problems

• You are about to have surgery - before your operation, you must tell the doctor or surgeon that you are taking aspirin

Ingredients

Active ingredients: Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid) 324mg per tablet, Sodium hydrogen carbonate 1774mg per tablet, Citric acid 965mg per tablet.

Other ingredients: Povidone, Dimeticone, Calcium silicate, Docusate sodium, Sodium benzoate (E211), Sodium saccharin, natural and artificial Lemon flavour and natural and artificial Lime flavour

How do I take Alka-Seltzer Original Effervescent Tablets?
 

Dosage:

Adults and children aged 16 and over:

TWO tablets every 4 hours, if necessary.

Do not take more than 8 tablets in 24 hours.

The dosages should not be continued for more than three days without consulting your GP.

What are the side effects of Alka-Seltzer Original Effervescent Tablets?
 

Possible side effects include: 

• Mild stomach pain and heartburn - these are the most common side effects but can usually be avoided if aspirin is taken with food

• Blocked or runny nose

• Skin reddening, blistering of lips, eyes, or mouth, skin peeling

• Dizziness or ringing in the ears

• Kidney problems

• Increased bleeding/blood thinning (if you cut or injure yourself), including bruises, nose bleeds, and/or bleeding gums

• Stomach ulcer or stomach bleeding which may result in black or tarry stools, nausea, diarrhea and/or vomiting

• Internal bleeding may result in anemia, causing weakness, increased tiredness, and pale skin.

• An asthma attack if you are asthmatic and sensitive to aspirin, or have breathing difficulties (bronchospasm)

• Changes in normal liver activity in blood tests (very rare)
